Budget guide to rent car in Jeju

Despite the network of buses in Jeju, it's always recommended to rent a car in Jeju. You won't want to wait 1 hour for bus and plan all your attraction visiting time according to bus schedule.

Renting a car in Jeju can be expensive though. To minimize the damage, here's a guide on how to get the cheapest (at least known to me) car rental in Jeju.

There are 3 ways to rent a car in Jeju
1. At the airport arrival counters
2. Online through global rental agencies.
3. Online through local Korean rental agencies.

Method 3 is the cheapest of all, followed by method 2 and of course renting on the spot will always be the most expensive.

The electric car (Soul 1600 AT) I rent, busy pumping electric :)

How to rent via local Korean agencies.

My previous experience is to rent via AJ Car Rental. https://www.ajrentacar.co.kr
You will need to register an account first before you can see the rental rates.

My previous rental cost me as below:-

Rental fee : 405,000 won
Discount fee : 121,500 won(discount rate : 70%)
Additional fee : 38,250 won
  - CDW : 38,250 won ( 슈퍼자차 )
Total Rental fee : 159,750 won

That is only RM 586.15 for a full electric car. You pump electric for this car instead of gasoline. It only cost RM 8 for a 100km electric full charge. Gasoline rate in Korea is around RM 6.50 per litre. That's ~RM 250 for a full tank of gasoline.

How to rent a car via global rental car agencies.

Example global car rental agencies are Sixt, Avis, RentalCars. Lets take an example from Sixt and check out the rate (Screenshot search taken on 14 March 2018)

As you can see, it's 200,062 won (RM 736). Of course it's not an apple to apple comparison though because the date is different and the car model is different. Please note the one I rent is on December festive period which is more expensive period. But you should get the idea right?

**** Very important thing when renting, get full CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) option. This will waive you from any penalty claims if there's accident on the car. Refusing to pay this and if accident happen, will be very costly. ****

Step by step guide in renting a car in Jeju

1. Make sure you are confident in driving left hand side.
2. International Driving License. You must get this done at local JPJ (RM 150 a year). Just pay and done, no exam needed. If you don't have this, you won't be able to rent a car there. The law is pretty strict.
3. Book via method 2 (local Korean car rental agencies) or method 3 (global car rental agencies).
4. Checked option for full CDW and GPS (you will need GPS, waze doesn't work in Jeju)
4. Pay online either pay now or pay later.
5. Get your car nearby the airport. All the car pickup location is near the airport and there's free shuttle bus to those locations.
6. After you get your car, abide the speed limit! Speed cameras is everywhere in Jeju and it's only 30-60km/h . You will go bankrupt paying those fines, if you don't bother about speed limit.
