Is it free to charge electric car in Jeju?

Short answer:- Yes. This is the answer I unable to google until I went to Jeju myself and no people seems to know about it.

However, you won't want to rent an electric car in Jeju unless you are very eco-friendly or want to experience driving electric car.

Soul (1600) AT charging battery at Cheonjiyeon waterfall. Free charging station! Special thanks to the tourism staff there for assisting my charging.

Why?

1. A full charged electric battery can run ~100km. Too little! Take a look at the map below. From Jeju International Airport to Seongsan Ilchulbong, it's 40km. If you are staying in Jeju City (which is nearby airport), you can only drive to Seongsan Ilchulbong and return to Jeju City, without any detour (that's 80km gone).

From my experience, I unable to charge in Seongsan Ilchulbong, and there's no free charging station there. There's also no charging station at Jeju Aqua Planet.

If your hotel is at Seogwipo, again it's 40km from Seogwipo to Seongsan Ilchulbong.

2. Took almost 3 hours to full charge a battery for 100km drive.
3. Free charging station is limited. Only 0 - 1 charging station at every public attractions.

How about paying for battery charging?

This is the best option if you are to drive electric car. Make sure the car rental company provide you the charging card. Why? Because, paying station on accept Korean credit card and not international credit card. No cash accepted. Normal T-money card is not accepted too. So you are screwed if you don't have Korean credit card to charge.

AJ Rental doesn't provide charging card. Sixt provided that. So, never ever rent electric car from AJ Rental. This will save you a lot of headache.

Paid charging station charge much faster. A full charge took only around 15-20 minutes.

Paid charging station. Pay with your credit card and the box will release the charging pump

Free charging station. Just grab that pump and charge!

Benefit of driving electric car in Jeju

1. New experience if you haven't drive an electric car before.
2. Cheap when charging. ~USD 2 for full charge battery. (Please note the car rental is a lot more expensive than gasoline, so total cost around the same).
3. Eco-friendly.

Cons of driving electric car in Jeju

1. Not many free charging stations available.
2. Need Korean credit card to pay in charging station.
3. Wasted time. You end up wasting time looking for charging stations and charging the car instead of visiting places.
